Few things warm up a room as quickly as a handwoven rug. Flat-woven kilims, with their bold geometry and earthy dyes, carry the feeling of sun-baked landscapes and generations of craft. They are lighter than pile rugs, easy to move and wonderfully forgiving of everyday life. Here is how to bring them into your living room with confidence.
Start with one rug you truly love
Choose a single rug as your anchor, ideally one with a colour you would happily live with for a long time. Rust, terracotta, faded indigo and soft saffron all sit beautifully with natural wood and plaster walls. Let this rug guide the rest of the room, pulling cushion and throw colours from its pattern.
Layer for depth and comfort
Layering is what gives a living room that collected, relaxed feel. Place a large, plain jute or wool rug as a base, then lay a smaller kilim on top at a gentle angle or squared to the sofa. The plain base grounds the furniture, while the kilim adds pattern exactly where you want the eye to land.
Mix patterns that share a colour, and they will look as though they were always meant to be together.
Balance pattern with calm
A patterned rug needs a little breathing room. Keep large surfaces such as sofas and walls fairly quiet, in warm white, sand or clay tones, and let the rug bring the energy. Repeat one of its colours in a few places around the room so everything feels connected.
- A cushion or throw that picks up the deepest tone in the rug
- A ceramic vase or bowl in a matching earthy glaze
- Natural textures like rattan, linen and raw wood to soften the look
- Green plants to add life against warm, dusty colours
Care that keeps them beautiful
Kilims are hardy, but a little care goes a long way. Use a non-slip underlay to keep them flat and safe, vacuum gently without a beater bar, and turn them now and then so they fade evenly in sunlight. Spills should be blotted, never rubbed, and stubborn marks are best left to a specialist cleaner.
