A desert garden does not have to be dusty or bare. With the right plants, a little planning and good soil preparation, you can create a garden that bursts into colour in spring and stays striking all year, all while using far less water than a traditional lawn.

Know your light and drainage

Most desert plants love sun and hate sitting in wet soil. Spend a day noting where the sun falls and where water collects after rain. Sunny, well drained spots are perfect for cacti and agaves. Shadier corners suit tougher succulents and flowering shrubs that enjoy a little relief from the afternoon heat.

Prepare the ground well

Good drainage is everything. Loosen compacted soil and mix in coarse grit or gravel so water drains away quickly. Gentle mounds and slopes help too, lifting plant roots above any wet patches. Finish with a mulch of gravel or crushed stone in warm, sandy tones to keep weeds down and roots cool.

Plant in generous groups and leave space between them. In a desert garden, the gaps are part of the beauty.

Choose plants for structure and bloom

Combine sculptural plants that give shape all year with flowering plants that bring a burst of seasonal colour.

  • Agaves and aloes for bold, architectural rosettes
  • Prickly pear and hedgehog cactus for spring blooms in pink, gold and coral
  • Lavender, sage and penstemon for soft colour and pollinators
  • Ornamental grasses for gentle movement in the breeze

Water deeply, then let it rest

New plants need regular water while they settle in. After that, water deeply but rarely, letting the soil dry out between drinks. Drip irrigation on a simple timer delivers water straight to the roots and wastes very little.

Add a place to enjoy it

A gravel path, a shaded bench or a small patio of terracotta pavers turns your garden into somewhere to linger. Warm evening light on cacti and stone is one of the loveliest sights a garden can offer.
