Every home deserves a corner made just for slowing down. A reading nook filled with sunshine, natural textures and a splash of bold pattern can feel like a mini holiday you visit every day. The best part is that it needs very little space.

Find the light

Look for a spot near a window where daylight lingers. A bay window, a bright landing or the end of a living room all work well. Soft, natural light is kind to the eyes and makes colours glow. Add a floor or wall lamp with a warm bulb for evenings.

Choose a chair with character

The chair is the star of the nook. A rattan peacock chair or a woven lounge chair brings instant personality and a relaxed, sunny mood. Whatever you choose, comfort comes first, so sit in it before you buy and add a deep cushion and a soft throw.

Let one bold piece lead, and keep everything else light, natural and easy going.

Bring in pattern and colour

A geometric rug underfoot defines the nook and makes it feel like its own little room. Pick up its colours in a cushion or a painted side cabinet. Turquoise, coral and saffron look especially cheerful against white or sand coloured walls.

  • A patterned flat-woven rug to anchor the space
  • A small side table for a cup of tea and your current book
  • Open shelves or a basket to keep favourite reads close
  • A trailing plant or a little terrarium for a touch of green

Keep it simple and inviting

Resist the urge to fill every surface. A nook works best when it feels calm and uncluttered, ready for you to curl up at a moment's notice. Rotate books and cushions with the seasons to keep it feeling fresh.
